Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Though today’s verse does not include the word “kindness” in it, our actions done in love and honoring others is one way we show kindness to others. It is the ultimate way to extend kindness because without love, what are we? We are nothing without love, and Christ IS love and He is within us.
Paul tells us that we are to be devoted to one another in love. In all honesty, there is no other way to be devoted to others if not with love. How can you show true devotion to someone if there is no foundation of love to build it upon? It is simply not possible. Anything built on something less than love is fragile and will collapse because we already said Christ IS love. Our devotion is built upon the foundation of Christ’s love. Scripture tells us we are to love others and we are to love as Jesus loves.
We are also told to honor one another above ourselves. That is hard to do sometimes. We are selfish people and we are self-seeking, even when we try not to be. We still do what we can to preserve ourselves, to protect our hearts, to keep us safe, healthy, and happy. But that devotion we show to ourselves? That is the devotion we should show to others. We should honor them as much as we honor ourselves and THEN MORE. We honor them above ourselves, more than we honor our own lives. Is it possible? By ourselves, no. But with Christ, all things are possible.
How do we honor others? We look to their needs and meet them. Sometimes we meet their needs before we meet our own. But we have a brotherly love for them and we show it in our actions. We walk through life alongside them, helping them when needed, guiding them if necessary, and doing all we can to help them move forward and grow spiritually.
How do you honor others? Do you honor them above yourselves? Think about that as you go about your day.
