We hear alot about love at Valentine’s Day. We celebrate the love a husband has for his wife, the love a mother has for her child, or the love a friend has for another friend. Humanity is only capable of feeling love, while God is capable of being love. There is a vast difference between feeling love and being love. To us love is something we have, an emotion. To God, however love is something God is; to Him love is an attribute. Love is a part of His character. The New Testament says, God is love; and …the God of love… (1 John 4:8; 2 Corinthians 13:11).
The love of God is an infinite, immeasurable, immutable love. First, His love is infinite; which means it has no beginning or ending. The Prophet Jeremiah said that God loves us with an everlasting love (Jer 31:3) Second, His love is immeasurable; which means it cannot be measured or contained. The Psalmist David sang that God’s love soars above the skies (Ps 36:5). Third, His love is immutable; which means it cannot change. The Apostle Paul wrote that nothing can seperate us from the love of God (Rom 8:38-39).
The love of God is demonstrated, described, and declared in the Scriptures. First, His love was demonstrated at Calvary. For God so loved the world that He gave His Son. While we were still sinners God sent Christ to die for us (Jn 3:16; Rom 5:8). The wonderful gift of being called the children of God came from love (1 Jn 3:1). Second, His love is described in 1 Corinthians 13. His love is patient and kind. It is not envious, boastful, prideful nor rude. His love is not selfish or easily angered. It keeps no records of wrongs. His love doesn’t delight in wickedness but rejoices in truth. The love of God bears all, believes all, hopes all, endures all. The love of God never fails. Third, the love of God is declared by you and me. The love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Rom 5:5) We, therefore, love one another with the love of God because He loved us first (1 Jn 4:7-11)
By your love for one another the world will know we are the disciples of Christ, not only on Valentine’s day but every day.
