T4JYM: How long have you been a Christian?
LK: I remembering saying a prayer asking God in my heart when I was five years old, but my faith became solid when I was thirteen.
T4JYM: Can you share a short testimony with our readers?
LK: The most amazing thing about what God is allowing my sisters and I to do is see His hand touch people through our words and songs. A few years ago, we had the opportunity to sing for a young man in the service preparing to go to Iraq for the first time. He was a very broken person, but really tough on the outside. We sang an older song called I Need You, it was about thinking you knew everything in life and that you didn’t really need God, but realizing you do, and he started to cry. That night he asked God into his heart and since then we’ve seen his love for God change himself and others. Those are the stories that keep us moving along.
T4JYM: When and how did you accept Christ into your heart?
LK: Sarah and I were at a youth convention in Pittsburgh PA when I was thirteen and, being raised in the church, I knew the drill. I expected the hyped up kids, the worship team, the speaker, and then we’d get pizza. I wasn’t expecting God to grip my heart like He did. The speaker tied himself from head-to-toe with ropes each representing a different stronghold on each of our lives. I ignored the ones about drugs and alcohol because I knew I was a “good” person and didn’t do things like that. But he said one represented a “fear of people”. That stopped me.
I had struggled with social anxiety for so long in my mind and I wanted to be free of it. He then had someone cut the ropes and each one he named what was in it’s place…in place of my fear was Joy! I told God he had me, completely and wholly. I said I would do whatever He desired and asked that my fears would be gone. Since that day, it’s been a hard road for me inside and out, but I know I’m not alone and never will be.
T4JYM: Do you ever get criticized for your work?
LK: When we first started it was sometimes hard for people to take three little girls seriously in what we were singing about. Addiction, redemption, joy, hardship, all of these things have always been key issues in our songs. We’ve decided everyone has their own opinions and trust God will keep us moving forward in His will.
T4JYM: Who, or what, are your biggest influences?
LK: Well, 50s, 60s, & 70s rock ‘n’ roll have been our main musical influences. Also people like DCTalk, Newsboys, Audio Adrenaline, Rebecca St. James, Switchfoot, they have all helped shape us musically into who we are today.
T4JYM: Who, aside from Jesus, is or has been the biggest influence in your life?
LK: In my life, the biggest influence would be split three very different ways: My mom and dad – they have supported us in every venture we’ve ever taken. My fiancé Jeremy, who’s believed in me and this ministry from the very beginning, always a rock for me. And C.S. Lewis, reading his work and about his life and sort of social anxiety that I could relate with really has helped shaped me into who I am.
T4JYM: Who do you look up to the most in life?
LK: I really look up to a lot of people, for many different reasons. Trying to pick one would be near impossible. But, as crazy as it sounds, I look up to my little sisters a lot. They have come a very long way, Julia was 9 yrs old when we began singing, and the three of us are very close. I know they have my back and I have theirs. They are amazing young women and I am honored to be with them.
T4JYM: Do you ever feel fear when you approach someone with the Gospel?
LK: Yes! Not because I don’t know what to say, but only because speaking with people has always been so hard for me. I’ve become more and more comfortable with approaching someone and asking if they need prayer or want to know more about God. The only way has been through praying God would speak through me, and consistency. I would encourage anyone with the same fear to remember: practice makes perfect. The more you talk about and to God, the more it becomes second nature. A good friend of mine always says: Get into God’s Word so it can get into you!
T4JYM: Are you involved in any other ministries?
LK: Other than the music, we are privileged to be partnering with Compassion International, an organization that sponsors young children in less fortunate areas of the world. We have had the amazing blessing to be on three short-term mission trips to Costa Rica and also Brazil. We met so many kids that we could love on and bring them gifts and tell them about Jesus, but then we went home.
We want to be a part of Compassion so that we can sponsor a young person and have a relationship build, not just a few weeks time pass by. And offer that opportunity to everyone we meet!! Though, we completely recommend any type of missions work, it’s amazing what God will show you when you are serving others.
