Devotion: 1 John 1:9

October 10, 2024

1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

In a month of prayer, we can’t go without exploring the topic of confessing our sins. Today’s verse covers just that. It is probably a verse you have heard before, so this may not be new information for you.

In order for us to be forgiven for the sins we commit, we need to confess and turn away from them. Unlike in Old Testament times, we do not need an intercessor praying on our behalf. We simply need to talk to God, who is there always and ready to hear and forgive. He is a faithful God, but also one who won’t accept sinful actions. Sin separates us from Him. When we intentionally continue to sin, we are not righteous. But we have the promise of this verse – God is faithful and just and WILL forgive us and make us righteous once more.

We shouldn’t let anything separate us from God, which is exactly what sin does. Whether you believe you can lose your salvation or not, the fact remains that nothing impure or unrighteous can be with God (Isaiah 59:2). We MUST be purified and cleansed. We must confess our sins and receive forgiveness. And we need to remember, confession is good, but confession alone does not restore fellowship with God and others (Ezekiel 14:6). We need to change our behaviors and live godly lives.

If you have unconfessed sins in your life holding you back, turn to God today. Confess those sins, receive forgiveness, and change your behavior. He knows all of your sins already (Hebrews 4:13). He just wants you to confess and repent to be restored to Him.
