Devotion: John 4:24

April 28, 2025

John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.

Reading back to get an understanding of what is happening, we see that Jesus is conversing with a Samaritan woman at the well. He offers her living water, which she assumes to be physical water that quenches thirst forever. But He explains that the water He offers is Himself and goes on to say that the time had come when true worshippers would worship the Father in spirit and truth (John 4:23), which leads us to today’s verse.

We see that God is spirit. He is more than a physical being. He is more than a creature as this would be limited by physical nature. He is not restricted in any way. He is above all of this, beyond it. Our minds cannot comprehend just what He is because we think in finite terms.

Though we cannot truly understand His nature and spirit, we are still called to worship Him in the Spirit and in truth. Notice that we are to worship “in the Spirit” – we are to depend upon the Holy Spirit within us to guide us in our worship and praise. We worship Him with sincerity and affection because we trust in Him as true and worthy.

Worship is to be freely given at any time and any location. We are not restricted to only worshiping on Sundays in church. We can enter into worship in the here and now, freely and genuinely. Today, spend time praising God from wherever you are. Seek Him from different locations and let your worship flow freely.
