Devotion: Colossians 1:9

June 6, 2025

Colossians 1:9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.

Start reading from the beginning of Colossians to understand what it is we are referring to in today’s reading. It is the faith of these believers that Paul speaks of when he writes of the prayer he and Timothy have for this body of Christians, and it serves as a powerful example of how we should be praying for one another as well.

Because of the faith the Colossians have, Paul and Timothy seek to encourage them to continue growing and learning more. It is their prayer that these believers would continue to be filled with knowledge of Christ’s will for their lives and godly living. He prays for discernment for them which is revealed through the wisdom and under that comes from the Spirit within them.

As believers we are to walk a life that glorifies God. The only way we can do this is to seek Him daily and continue to learn more. The Spirit within us reveals the direction we are to go in our lives and guides us in holy living. Just like the Colossians, we should strive to live godly lives, not worldly ones, modeling our lives after Christ. Out thinking should be full of His wisdom, not like that of the world (1 Corinthian 2:5).

God’s knowledge, His wisdom and understanding, should govern all we do. It should be the foundation of and basis for all of our thoughts, words, and actions. And we can only discover His will by continuing to grow in our faith.

Consider your own daily actions. Are they leading you to God? What can you add to your daily routine that will help you to grow in your faith today?
