2 Peter 1:4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
To understand what we are talking about in today’s verse we need to first go back and read the context. We see from Peter that it is through His divine power that we have been given everything we need to live a godly life. We are equipped and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live a life that is pleasing to God who has called us by His own glory and goodness.
It is through His glory and goodness that we have been given His great and precious promises. Peter doesn’t list the actual promises for us in this verse, but the Bible is full of them and we can turn to other verses to learn more. These promises are not just for the future, for after we die, but they include fulfilled promises – receipt of the Holy Spirit, salvation, transformation, escape from the influence of sin, and the experiencing of joy, hope, and love.
Peter encourages believers to respond to these promises by growing in their faith. But keep in mind that we receive these gifts by grace, not from the work of our own hands. It is through our faith that we actively choose to enter His presence and we are then able to partake in the divine nature. The Greek word used here is koinonia which is translated as fellowship, sharing, or communion. When we become believers, we share in His divine nature. We become righteous and holy, as He is righteous and holy.
Always remember that you have been called to partake in His divine nature, free from the sin and corruption that once held you prisoner. Celebrate the promises He has given us and live your life free from the control of sin.
