Devotion: John 15:26

Aug 26, 2025

John 15:26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.”

Jesus promised His followers that they would not be alone after He left. He told them a Helper would be sent to them, an Advocate, a Comforter. No one knew what He meant at the time but we know now and it is the same Spirit we have in each of us.

He referred to this Helper as the Spirit of Truth. Why did Jesus call Him that? He validated the nature of the Spirit when He called Him Truth. The Spirit’s nature is truth. He communicates truth to us. He embodies truth in all He does. He IS truth.

Jesus also said the Spirit comes from the Father. Even then we see His divine nature yet His distinct role. We see the divine unity and authority of the Trinity in God the Father, Jesus, and the Spirit of Truth who goes out from the Father. We can fully trust the Spirit and rely on Him to guide us and reveal truth to us.

His role was the same as our own – to testify about Jesus. In a time when there was hostility towards Jesus, the Spirit would testify to His power and authority. The Spirit also empowers us to testify. With the help of the Spirit we can boldly proclaim His truths, what He has done in our own lives, and no one can refute this.

And this same Spirit is still with us now, still supporting us and providing strength to us, still guiding our steps and leading us. You have the Spirit inside of you, with you at all times, comforting you when you are in need, revealing new spiritual truths to you as you grow, and walking with you every step of the way. What a comforting thought to know our God loves us so much that He has given us the Spirit to go with us always!
