Luke 1:67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied…
Zechariah was the father of John the Baptist who had gone mute for asking for a sign that what the angel had said about his elderly wife being pregnant with the forerunner to Christ was true. The sign was him being mute until his son was born and then he was filled with the Holy Spirit and began prophesying.
The prophecy spoken by Zechariah is known as the Benedictus or the Song of Zechariah. It is a song of praise and thanksgiving that thanks God for fulfilling His promises to Israel. It speaks of a coming salvation for God’s people and prophesies the role John the Baptist would have. It is still used in some churches as a form of prayer and worship.
This was all done through the Spirit. The Spirit filled Zechariah and opened his mouth to speak, flowing through him to provide the words that brought hope and joy to those who heard it. The Spirit enabled him to speak prophecies and His inspiration was recorded in Scripture for future generations , for you and I today.
But how does it apply to us today when it was a specific event that happened to a priest before Jesus was born?
The reason I chose to include this verse was to show the power of the Spirit in our lives. When the Spirit fills us we are able to do things we never imagined we’d be able to do. When we are filled with the Spirit we have the power to speak truth to people. The Spirit speaks through us. He inspires us and gives us the words to say. We do not act in our own power. We have no power. It is the power of the Spirit that fills our mouths with the words to speak.
Ask the Spirit to fill you and then let Him speak through you. Be the mouthpiece of wondrous monologue, the voice of inspirational dialogue, the proclaimer of truth and wisdom. Let the Spirit empower you in a similar manner to how He filled and empowered Zechariah.
