Devotion: Psalm 128:1

Jan 2, 2026

Psalm 128:1 Blessed are all who fear the Lord , who walk in obedience to him.

Today we find ourselves in the psalms, beautiful music made to help us learn to talk to God ourselves. The Bible is God talking to us, psalms are us talking to Him. Today we look at one that is often called the Song of Ascents (or the Pilgrim’s Song). Its author is unknown, and it is classified as a wisdom psalm. The theme of this psalm is blessings on a God-fearing household, family, and nation.

We begin with blessed are all who fear the Lord. This is not saying we will be blessed if we are scared of God. Fear in this sense, and any time you see it in the phrase “fear the Lord” or “fear of the Lord” doesn’t mean the feeling we have when we are scared of someone or have a frightful experience. It means respect and reverence. We honor God by respecting Him and showing Him reverence, praise, and honor.

If you are unclear on what it means when we say blessings, here’s an AI response: In the Bible, “blessed” (Greek: makarios) signifies a deep, inner joy, contentment, and spiritual well-being that comes from God’s favor, even amidst hardship, rather than just external good fortune, encompassing salvation, God’s presence, and alignment with His will.

But the focus here I want to draw us back to is the obedience part. Blessed are those WHO WALK IN OBEDIENCE. As we said yesterday, sometimes it is hard to be obedient to His calling or what is going on in our lives. Sometimes we are control freaks (I say this because this is all me) and have a hard time letting go and letting God do the work for us. And sometimes His call seems to be something outrageous and the fear of the unknown holds us back.

But blessed are those who walk in faith and trust in His plan, those who obey and follow Him without fear and worry. This is my goal this year. I want to be obedient. I want to walk in faith and trust His ways. I am trying to let go of my control issues and learning to trust instead. And I trust that He will bless my efforts because I know He is a good Father who loves and cares for each of us and wants what is best.

Do you struggle with control issues? Do you have issues with fear and worry? How can YOU be obedient this month and throughout the year?

Prayer: Lord, I want to walk in obedience but need help letting go of the things holding me back. Help me lay them at your feet and obey Your call. Amen
