2 John 1:6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.
Today we venture into the book of 2 John and see a reminder of what love is. We are told to walk in obedience, no matter how hard it can seem at times. Love is everything to us. It shapes our days, guides our steps, and dictates how we interact with others. Are you being obedient or are you walking in the ways of self indulgence and personal pursuits?
True Christian love is more than just a feeling we have towards others. It is obedience, a choice we make daily, hourly, minute by minute, to God’s commands to love one another. It is us making the effort to love not only those individuals in our life that we easily love but also those who may be harder to embrace. Our obedience to love demonstrates that we are walking in God’s will and touches the lives of everyone we encounter in a day.
Love is an action. Walking indicates that we are actively DOING. It is a choice we make each day to walk according to His commandments. It is a verb, a way of life. It is so much more than just emotional responses, but demonstration of His love for us poured out on others.
Can we really call ourselves Christians if we don’t love the unlovable? It doesn’t matter how much time we spend in our Bible reading, how much time we spend praying, if we are not loving others we are not obeying His call for our lives. True love and truth are inseparable. If we love God we should be loving others, because that is what He told us we need to do. We should want to see blessings in their lives and we need to show kindness, compassion, and love to everyone.
Who can you love today? God provides many opportunities for us to step out in faith and reach others in His Name each day. He sets up those divine appointments for us. But are we being obedient when He orchestrates those encounters or are we going about our own business, assuming someone else will meet their needs? Stop and pray that He would set you on the path to living others and then DO it. Don’t let His opportunities pass you by.
Prayer: Lord, Put people before me today that I can love. Give me Your love to pour out on them, even if I am not feeling it. Fill me with Your love so that I can bless others. Amen
