Devotion: Psalm 119:34

Jan 13, 2026

Psalm 119:34 Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart.

Psalm 119 is one of the longest psalms in the entire book and contains SO much great information in it to help guide us in our daily lives. If you have some time, I highly recommend reading through all parts of it.

Today’s verse is a central theme in this extra long chapter of the Psalms. It is simple in its request. Give me understanding. I want to have understanding in my faith and my walk. And sometimes there are verses that really leave me confused and wondering, verses that make me dig deeper to try to figure out what God’s message is that is hidden from me at the time.

Give me understanding so that I may keep your law. We need understanding and discernment when it comes to keeping His commandments, whether Old Testament Law or New Testament commands from Jesus. We need to discern when it is the right time to engage with others and the best time to wait on God. We need understanding of what the Laws mean and how they are applied to the situations in our lives. And its okay to not have the answer or to be left wondering. In those cases, go to a trusted mentor or teacher and ask. Seek the answers so that you do understand.

The verse concludes with …so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart. We should want to do everything for Him with all our heart. Our service to others, our obedience to His commands, our personal study time in the Word… each of these should be done with all our heart. We should be fully invested, wholly involved, totally present in everything we do for Him because that is how we honor and glorify our Lord. We show wholehearted obedience in everything we do.

Today is a new day, a fresh start. Step out in faith today and show total obedience to what He is calling you to do. Don’t ignore the small nudges, the little coincidences – God orchestrates divine appointments all the time. The question is, are you ready to step into what He has for you?

Prayer: Lord, Give me understanding. I need to understand what You are calling me to do and how to do it. Help me to step into Your plan for me obediently. Amen
