Devotion: Romans 6:17

Jan 14, 2026

Romans 6:17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.

Paul starts out this verse with thanks to God and I echo that thanks because we are no longer slaves to sin. Now we are children of God, heirs to righteousness, saved and redeemed. We have been transformed and are new creations and sin has no hold on us any longer!

But have you ever stopped to think about your obedience? Are you obeying His commands wholeheartedly, from deep within you, from your heart? Or are you obeying outwardly only, doing just the minimum to appear obedient while still living in sin in private? We have been called to live a righteous life, holy and set apart. We cannot let past sins hold us back from being fully, wholly, and entirely obedient. Not only do we grieve Him when we continue in sinful ways, but we miss out on blessings that He wants to bestow upon us.

We have talked about choosing to be obedient many times this month and if you haven’t started being obedient to Him thus far, here it comes again. We must choose to walk in the Light and embrace the calling God has placed in our lives. We cannot continue to allow sin to have any hold on us if we want to be obedient. Letting sin linger keeps us slaves to sin, and we are no longer slaves. We have been set free. But we have to choose to walk in that freedom and it starts with obedience.

When we are obedient, we demonstrate a sincere, internal change. We are made new. We have the shackles unlocked, the chains removed, the prison doors opened. We are free, but we must walk through those doors and out into the Light. It is not just external actions or legalistic following that we experience, it is total transformation through obedience to His Word.

Today is the day to set aside those remaining sins that are holding you back, to stop allowing sin to hold you captive, and to walk in His freedom. Embrace the shift from sin’s bondage to a life of sincere, heartfelt devotion to the truth of the Gospel. Let your obedience be wholehearted and complete. He died for You to be free, so today let’s obey His call and walk in freedom.

Prayer: Lord, Thank You for forgiving my sins. May my life be one of total obedience that begins in my heart and is demonstrated in every action. Amen
