Review:

This was not my first book by Suzanne Woods Fisher, but it has been a favorite so far. I think I enjoyed this story far more than her previous works, though all of her writing is good. Though I am not a huge fan of contemporary fiction, I have found that I am a fan of Amish based novels. I appreciate how this book continues with characters and a setting from previous novels, all of which can be reviewed before the story begins. It was helpful refreshing my memory with the list of characters and descriptions. I also love how there are discussion questions at the end of the book that allow you to discuss it with others. Perfect for book clubs and small groups! The story itself was well written, developing nicely as it progressed. I like how there is a contrast between modern medicinal practices and the Amish community, as well as between character personalities and abilities. There were multiple threads of stories woven together to create the overall story, allowing each character to discover their own unique calling from God. The faith element was present but did not overshadow the story or distract from the plot, enhancing it instead. And the same can be said about the romantic aspects that were embedded within. They unfolded naturally and didn’t feel forced or distracting, rather adding to the overall feel of the story. And with each book I read that is based in the Amish community, the more I learn about the people and culture. I cannot imagine trying to minister to people who have such a vastly differing background and lifestyle, yet they do just that through medicine. I feel it was a great novel and I enjoyed it greatly. Don’t miss out on this gem!
