Psalm 23:3 …he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
Psalm 23 is one of the more famous psalms and is widely used in funerals and solemn events and activities. It is not generally viewed as a happy psalm, though the message is clearly one of peace and serenity. I don’t know why it is so often associated with solemnity, but it is.
Written by David, this psalm explores the intimate and personal care a shepherd has for his sheep. David’s early years were spent in the fields with the sheep so he understood them deeply and was able to write psalms like this one to describe the relationship a shepherd has with his flock.
Like a shepherd who guides his sheep to safety and revives a weary lamb, God also tends to the needs of His people and guides them. He restores and refreshes our soul. Just like the sheep who can lose its footing or wander off, so, too, can we falter and lose our way. But He brings us life, He comforts us, and He restores our vitality.
He guides us along the right paths. He knows which paths we should take and He directs our steps to ensure we follow the path He intends us to follow. Of course, we do have free will and can step out from that intended path, but He is always there to guide us back and put us back on the path to righteousness once again.
And He does all of this for His Name’s sake. This means our life is a testament to His character. We make morally righteous choices and strive to live a life of integrity. Our goal is to point others to Christ and His faithfulness, His goodness and grace and mercy. We want our lives to be living testimonies of what He has done in our lives and continues to do.
Today let’s do what we can to embrace His restoration. The Hebrew word for restore means to bring back, to return or to refresh. We need to let go of the pressures of life, the need to perform and impress, and we need to allow His restoration to wash over us and to bring us back to Him and His path.
Prayer: Lord, Restore me and give me refreshment for Your Name’s sake. Guide me back to the path of righteousness and let me be a living example to others of Your goodness and grace. Amen
