Revelation 21:5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
The end of the story, the triumph of good over evil, and then the happily ever after. The ends of stories always bring such joy and peace as things all work out, pieces fit together, and you see the bigger picture. And what better story of the end is there than the one we will get to experience? We will see the end of the story, when Jesus returns to claim His bride, and the enemy is cast into the lake of fire.
Today’s verse comes at the end of the Bible and has the purpose of reminding us of the ultimate, final, culminating promise of redemption that is yet to come. It is the promise of God restoring creation, claiming His bride, taking us home where we’ll spend forever with Him in the new Jerusalem on the new earth. At that point there will be no death, no more pain, no more tears and suffering, no more sin. What a glorious ending, indeed!
Throughout all of chapter 21 in the book of Revelation, you get an overview of what the newly remade, new earth and new heaven will be. We see the beautiful and restorative results of what comes after a final battle, a creation that is free from sin and corruption, the way God intended it to be originally in the garden before man fell from His grace.
John is told to write it down. We have the book of Revelation because of his obedience to God as he wrote things he didn’t understand or fully know how to describe. This final written word serves as a guarantee of the coming restoration, an absolute certainty, not a passing idea or a figurative illustration. God guarantees that this is how His story will end and He had John write it down to share with us so that we have hope in the future. The end is coming and we have a part of it!
Wherever you are in your life today, whether that means you need to surrender past failures, hurts, worries and anxieties, and sins to God, He has a plan. He has a bright, happy ending for you. He has a happily ever after in store for all of us. We must be patient and wait for it to come, but have hope that it WILL happen. His timing, not ours. And it will be more glorious than word can describe.
Prayer: Lord, Thank You for the future glory that is yet to come. Thank You for having a plan to restore humanity to Yourself, for remaking the earth into a place of peace and rest, Amen
