Psalm 37:11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.
The psalm from which today’s verse is taken from is a guide on how to handle frustration and envy. It serves as an encouragement to us to remain patient, to strive to do good, and to rest in the Lord rather than getting angry at those who do wrong. The verse promises us that those who trust in God, those who remain humble despite the injustices around them, will be rewarded with stability, justice, and inner peace.
The word meek is not describing people who are weak. It comes from the Hebrew word anav and describes someone who is humble and gentle, someone who relies on God rather than relying on their own strength. The meek rely on God to handle mistreatment rather than relying on themselves or trying to retaliate.
The verse goes on to speak of inheriting the land. The ancient Israelites saw this as possessing the land that God had promised to Abraham. But for us it is more. Jesus quoted this in the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:5, expanding it beyond just the lands promised to the Israelites to a spiritual inheritance.
The verse ends with enjoying peace and prosperity. In some translations it is read as abundant peace. This describes a deep, long lasting contentment that can only come from aligning our lives with God’s ways. The humble find deep, lasting joy and tranquility in His promises. It is a reward for choosing faith instead of the chaos or turmoil of the wicked or of harboring anger at these people.
The word for peace in this verse is once again shalom. But when shalom is paired with abundance we get something beautiful. We get an overflowing, multi-faceted prosperity that has a deep impact or effect on our mind, spirit, and our life.

Prayer: Lord, Thank You for giving us peace in abundance. Help me to let go of any anger or bitterness I have at the injustices of the world and live a life that is humble and obedient. Amen
