Devotion: 1 Samuel 10:6

October 18, 2026

1 Samuel 10:6 The Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person.

There is no denying that when you are touched by the Lord and His Spirit comes upon you, you are a changed person. In today’s verse, we see what happened to Saul, the first king of Israel, when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him.

The people of Israel wanted a king, though they had the Lord and His judges He raised up to govern them. They saw the nations around them all ruled by kings and wanted the same. In response, the Lord came upon Saul, appointing him as the first king and filling him with His power.

The Spirit of the Lord came upon him powerfully and quickly. It did not happen over time. It was a sudden, powerful, supernatural surge of power from the Lord as He came upon Saul. This is the same way the Spirit came upon judges like Samson or Gideon in the past. There was no human effort involved, nothing that Samuel, the prophet who annointed Saul as king, did to make it happen. It was divine intervention, divine annointing direct from God.

When the Spirit had come upon him, Saul prophesied alongside the other prophets. He spoke under the influence of the Spirit that was upon him and it marked him publicly as a man chosen by God. There was no denying that Saul had been appointed by God and God Himself authorized Saul to speak on His behalf.

Saul was a changed man after the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. He was transformed from an ordinary citizen of Israel into a king ready to rule his people. It was a functional and mental shift that changed him from an ordinary farmer into a capable leader who had the courage, wisdom, and knowledge needed to rule as the first king of Israel.

But what does this have to do with us? We don’t see the Lord falling upon us in the same manner today, publicly anointing us for our roles in society. So does it still apply today?

Unlike Saul and the early Israelites, we have the Spirit within us already. We have received the Spirit and He is with us at all times. He does not need to fall upon us and empower us because He is already walking through life with us, guiding our steps.

Like Saul, we, too, can have our hearts changed (1 Samuel 10:9) and our lives transformed. When we step into our calling, into the plan and purpose that God has for us, we go equipped and prepared. The Spirit gives us all we need and qualifies us for the role we move into. But we must continue to seek His will and follow His prompting. We still have free will, as Saul did, and can choose to turn away or disobey (which is what led Saul to his destruction and the Spirit leaving him) or follow Him in the path He has put before us.

Let’s step into our day with confidence and boldness, knowing the Lord is with us and has made a way for us. Let Him transform you into the person He wants you to be. Be obedient to His call, to His guiding hand, and thank Him for what He is doing in your life.

Prayer: Lord, Thank You for filling me with Your Spirit. Thank You for being with me and guiding me as I go through my day. Use me to do Your will. Amen
