Review:

This was a thoroughly enjoyable young adult fictional story. I usually enjoy reading YA novels because they are such easy, quick reads, and I was not disappointed by this story. It is imaginative and well developed, though I do believe it is written more for the younger side of the Young Adult category. My third grade daughter (who reads at a much higher grade level, more around a sixth grade reading level) is currently reading it and tells me all about her favorite parts when she finishes reading for the evening. Having read it myself before giving it to her, I know when she is understanding the story compared to when she may or may not be confused. Regardless, it is well written and free of overly descriptive or wordy chapters. It flows well from one section to the next and is easy to keep up with and understand. It is not heavy or depressing in any way, but lighthearted and imaginative. In my opinion, it is fairly evident where author Sarah Arthur has drawn inspiration from. Her writing reminds me of other well known author’s fantasy works (think C.S. Lewis and Madeleine L’Engle) and classic fairytales. It was the first time I have heard of this author, but it was an enjoyable time spent reading. I plan to look into more of her writing and see what else she has to offer. If you are looking for a simple, well written fantasy read, this is a great place to begin.
