Proverbs 10:23 A fool finds pleasure in wicked schemes, but a person of understanding delights in wisdom.
Proverbs has so many amazing verses on wisdom that we could write a few months worth of devotions. Today’s verse is just one among many that compare a fool to a wise person. Let’s unpack this a bit and see what we can learn that goes deeper than what is obviously there on the surface.
We begin with what not to do. We don’t want to be like the fool who delights in doing wrong. In today’s day in age we see wickedness all around us. Sin abounds. What’s worse? People not only ignore sin and its consequences, but they find pleasure in it. If it feels good, do it. If it doesn’t hurt anyone, go for it.
Wrong! That is NOT true. It DOES harm people. It harms the sinner, it grieves the Spirit, it disappoints the Father who sent His only Son to die for that person who so callously ignores that fact. There’s no pleasure in wicked schemes or sinful behavior. Any pleasure the fool gets is temporary and passes away. Sin and wickedness are not entertainment and shouldn’t bring pleasure.
And then we have the person of understanding. The wise one. The one who walks in wisdom and understands that sin is wrong. The wise person finds delight, joy. They respect God and revere Him. They follow His commands and obey Him out of a healthy fear of the Lord. They understand that all will stand before the throne for judgment and there is no escape from the consequences.
We need to heed the words of Moses spoken in Psalms 90:12 – “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” We need to be living each day with the right mindset – one that is focused on judgment and glorious eternity.
Where does your pleasure come from? If you are not saying it comes from the Lord and His wisdom, you might want to rethink how you are living your life and your understanding of consequences.
