Devotion: Lamentations 3:24

November 11, 2024

Lamentations 3:24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

It is not often that we hear from books like Lamentations, but ALL Scripture is God-breathed and useful for instruction (2 Timothy 3:16) which includes Lamentations. This book is assumed to be by the prophet Jeremiah and records his sorrows and lament at what has happened to God’s people. But it is also a book of hope and inspiration. Today’s verse is just one example of the positive inspiration that can be found in it.

Jerusalem had been ransacked and destroyed. But in the midst of all of the devastation, the author still trusted in God and His promises. The term my portion in Hebrew points us to the concept of an inheritance or the idea of receiving a part that has been set apart specifically for you, typically land which provides sustenance and life. Thus, the portion spoken of in this verse indicates God is the source of life for us, the inheritance that meets our needs and provides for our growth and development.

This is not the first time we have seen this concept mentioned in the Bible. The tribe of Levi did not receive a land inheritance. Instead, as priests they received the Lord as their portion (Deuteronomy 10:9). He promised this tribe that He would be their inheritance and would be their provision.

When times get bad for us and things feel hopeless, we can trust that He is our portion, too. He will provide a way for us (1 Corinthians 10:13). We can find hope in this promise. All we have to do is trust Him and wait. The waiting can sometimes feel overwhelming, but we can rest assured He has plans for all those who wait on Him.

Take hope in this promise, yourself. Let Him be your portion and wait on Him to make a way.
