Psalm 130:3-4 If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you.
Can you imagine the record of sins the Lord might have against you? I know mine alone are probably volumes long. I cannot imagine Judgment Day and the process of going through each one to give account… I know we will still stand for judgment that day, but we have assurances from verses like this that there is forgiveness.
Verse three says “who could stand” if record was kept of every sin and transgression. This speaks volumes about our sinful nature. We are all sinners and no matter how hard we try, we cannot live a perfect, holy life. We still fall short. And if each of those sins was collected, recorded, and we were to stand before God to explain, none of us would be worthy of eternal life with Him.
But in His infinite love, He provided the solution. His precious Son became the sacrifice for our sins. His death on the cross paid the penalty for this record of sins. It slammed the record book shut, bound it permanently, and destroyed it entirely. Our sins were wiped clean and we became new creations.
Granted we will still sin. It is in our human nature as a result of the fall. But there is now no more condemnation for those who are in Him ( Romans 8:1). We are made righteous and as a result we can serve Him in reverence. We do not have to fear punishment. We know we belong to Him and that He has plans for us. His love, His sacrifice, His forgiveness have opened the doors for us to be His hands and feet on earth, helping others learn of His goodness and forgiveness, as well.
