Romans 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.
We have talked greatly about obedience to God and fleeing from our past lives, but we haven’t really talked about what happens when we indulge in those evil desires. Today’s verse tells you exactly what happens and it is not a good thing.
Paul warns readers not to let sin reign in our bodies. We have to be careful we don’t let sin take root and make a permanent home in our lives or we become slaves to sin and not righteousness. Chapter six, from the very first verse, Paul talks to believers, not unbelievers, about how we are those who have DIED to sin (Romans 6:2). We have been crucified with Christ and we should no longer BE slaves to sin (Romans 6:6) because we have all been set free from sin (Romans 6:7).
So why would we allow sin to reign in our bodies? Not just take up residence there, but the REIGN. To rule. We are free and should walk in freedom because Christ has already died for those sins, nailed them to the cross and washed us with His blood.
Remember – he was saying this to believers. And it is believers I am repeating it to now. Why would we let sin take ownership of us, to rule our lives, to allow our bodies to be obedient to the sin itself rather than obedient to Christ? Sin is not our master and should never be given that opportunity to reign in our lives (Romans 6:14).
Kick sin out. Do away with it. Repent, be free, and walk in the love of Christ as one who is redeemed, renewed, and transformed. And let Him be glorified in your actions because sin has no hold in your life any longer. You were brought from death to life and you are an instrument of righteousness. Claim that for your life and live it proudly and boldly for Him.
Prayer: Lord, I want to be an instrument of righteousness in Your hands. Sin has no hold on me any longer. I confess it and give it to You. Amen
