Romans 8:6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
Today we look at two different mindsets or ways of thinking. In this one verse we get complete opposites of death versus life, all governed by the mind. It shows us just how important our mindset can be in our daily life. We see that what we choose to think about, what we allow our minds to focus on, shapes our lives.
First we need to look at the word governed in this verse. We see it used twice, comparing the mind governed by the flesh with the mind governed by the Spirit. The word governed is translated from the Greek word phronema. This word literally means mindset or disposition. So, we get a translation that says the mind of the flesh is death and the mind of the Spirit is life.
The NIV uses the word governed instead of the word disposition for a reason. It is a passive word that is being used, but it is also a continuous one, an ongoing action. Our mind is continuously being controlled or governed by either the flesh or the Spirit. The choice is ours.
The flesh represents the humanistic, worldly desires that lead to spiritual death and separation from God. It is a life that relies solely on natural instincts and worldly desires, separate from God’s guidance and purpose. The unbeliever does not realize that seeking to fill these carnal, worldly longings is an empty pursuit. It can never satisfy and it leads to condemnation and death.
The mind of the Spirit produces abundant, eternal life. It also provides us with a deep inner peace that can only be achieved through God. When we allow the Spirit to guide our thoughts, our desires, and our actions, we are able to experience a fulfilling spiritual vitality and true peace (eirene) of God. When we surrender our thoughts to the Spirit, we find freedom from anxiety and struggle, instead enjoying peace and spiritual well-being.
What is governing your mind? Are you choosing to let the Spirit guide your thinking? Or are you still letting your flesh get in the way? It is natural for us to have our flesh step in every now and then. We are human and we are sinful creatures. But when that happens we have the choice to get our mindset right and to once more focus on the things of heaven not the things of earth.
Today let’s choose to give the Spirit full access to our minds. Focus your attention on Him and seek His will for your day and for your life. Then walk in that way, led by Him, enjoying life and peace.
Prayer: Lord, I don’t want my flesh to govern my mind. I want my mind to belong fully to You. I want You to be the focus of every thought and action. Guide me and help me live a life of peace. Amen
