Isaiah 3:13 The Lord takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people.
In the book of Isaiah we find this passage from chapter three that describes God as a Judge sitting in a courtroom. We find Him there to bring charges against the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem. It is not a prophetic verse or indication of something in the future. Isaiah is seeing it play out in his time and he describes it as a warning to the people.
God presents His case actively. He is not sitting by and observing. Isaiah tells us He takes His place and He rises to judge. These indicate action being done by the Lord. He is there to present His case against the leaders to show them how they have failed in their roles as leaders, failing in their responsibilities in leading His people appropriately. Instead, they have abused their power in pursuit of personal gain. Society is in utter disarray and chaos, the nation falling to ruin. And He is done sitting by. He steps forward to present His case and pass judgement.
In verses 1-12 we see the various ways they have failed as leaders. And it is in verse thirteen that God steps out of His position as a passive observer to take action against the leaders. Not only does this verse serve as warning to the leaders, it serves as hope for those who are being oppressed. God Himself steps in to champion their cause and bring justice where needed.
Why is this important? What is the purpose of Isaiah describing this dramatic courtroom scene? It shows us that we have a God Who cares about each of us, all the way down to the poor and needy. He demonstrates that He is not indifferent to their needs and He won’t sit by and allow injustice and oppression, especially when it brings about chaos and societal collapse. He personally involves Himself in bringing justice and righting the wrongs of those who abuse their power.
That means you and I can trust that even today, all of these years later, we can trust that He has a plan and He wants the best for us. We may not understand why we go through something we feel is unfair or unjust, but we can have hope that He will champion our cause as well. He will not allow ongoing abuse of power towards His people, of which you and I now belong as children of God adopted into His family.
Have hope, friends. We may face trials and struggle to understand what is taking place but we have a God Who loves us and steps in to bring charges against and pass judgement on those in leadership who abuse their power and oppress the poor and needy. If He did it then, He will do it again.
Prayer: Lord, We live in a world where leaders regularly seek things that benefit them and regularly oppress the poor. Step in and stop the injustice and abuse of power. Help us to have hope in You to stand up for us. Amen
