Devotion: Isaiah 33:22

May 29, 2026

Isaiah 33:22 For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; it is he who will save us.

In this verse we see God has three roles He holds. We also see that it is He who saves us. The verse was a rallying cry for the people of Judah who were facing destruction from the Assyrian Empire. It was a reminder that God is the ultimate Judge who would save and vindicate them.

In it we see that the Lord is our judge. He sees everything. He sees the rights, as well as the wrongs that are done. It is the Lord who defends the oppressed and it is the Lord who brings vindication.

The Lord is our lawgiver. It was God who established all standards of righteousness and it is the Lord who we see as truth. He put His laws in place for us to have a moral structure and to ensure order. And it was God who gave us truth and set Himself apart from the other pagan empires.

He is our King. He is sovereign over all, holding supreme authority over everything. He remains unchallenged in His authority because there is none worthy to be King, none righteous enough to come close to what our Lord is. Our Lord is truly the King of all kings.

It is interesting to see these three roles applied to Christ. They are often viewed as foreshadowing of the coming King, Jesus. He fulfills each of these roles. He is the Ultimate Judge (John 5:22), the fulfiller/teacher of the Law (Matthew 5:17), and the King of kings (Revelation 19:16).  How amazing is that?

He is our Savior. He will save us. We cannot save ourselves. We need Him. And He alone is worthy to fill the role of Lord of our lives. He alone is our Judge. He alone is our Lawgiver. He alone fulfilled the Law, nailing it to the cross forever. And He alone is our King. Let your life reflect the love you have for Him, the Holy One  who gave everything for you to be saved.

Prayer: Lord, You hold the roles of King, Judge, and Lawmaker of my life and it is You that saved me when I needed You most. I want my life to be lived for You. Amen
