Hebrews 10:36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.
We once again have a verse that does not mention patience in it. But many times it takes great patience to persevere (in some versions it calls it endurance). In the Bible, perseverance is the steadfast endurance, commitment, and patient trust in God while navigating trials, hardships, and temptation. And that is what we will focus on in today’s reading.
The recipients of this letter were Jewish believers who were facing some intense persecution for their faith in Christ and who were considering returning to Judaism. The author was encouraging them to hang in there, to stay strong, to persevere because there was something greater coming, to a future hope in what Jesus promised each of us – eternal glory and heaven.
Perseverance and endurance is not passively waiting for a future promise. Instead, it is continuing to obey God’s will actively, despite the challenging circumstances that life throws at us. We are called to stand strong, to hang in there and wait on what we have coming in the future. The goal is receiving what God has promised – eternal life and rewards that follow faithful obedience.
What can we learn from this verse today? It is often used to encourage Christians in times of trials. We should remember that we need patience in waiting on God’s timing and we are not to give up but rather to have faith in what is yet to come. We have the promise of eternity with God. Jesus has gone before us to prepare a room for us in His Father’s house.
So don’t let trials and hardships, challenges and tribulations stop you from hoping in the future. Be patient, endure, persevere. Trust in His timeline and have faith and look forward to what is yet to come.
Prayer: Lord, Be my strength in the hard times. Let me trust in Your timeline and have faith in the eternal glory You have promised us when we meet You face to face. Amen
