Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.
We have spent the majority of this month in verses from the New Testament, but today we are digging into a verse from the book of Isaiah long before Christ set us free. But just because Jesus had not yet given Himself in our place, it does not mean that there was not freedom to be found in the Lord. Let’s look at today’s verse and see how freedom was proclaimed even then.
The mission of every follower of Christ is to share the gospel with others. This verse shows us that every servant has a divinely appointed mission they are to engage in. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are to bring hope and freedom to those who are stuck in their sins. We are to preach the good news to the poor, to bind up those who are brokenhearted, and to lead them to walk in the freedom that is only available through the Lord.
We do not do this alone. We have the Spirit within us, guiding us, speaking through us, using us to do His will. When we do not know what to say, the Spirit speaks the words we need to speak using us as His mouthpiece. We bring a message of hope to those who are lost and hurting and we offer comfort, healing, and restoration to them. And we proclaim freedom to the captives, to those who are prisoners to sin.
This passage is often used as a prophecy for the work Jesus would do for us and He even quoted it Himself in Luke 4:18-19. But it also highlights the role that each of us has as His followers. We have been commissioned by Him to be His mouthpiece, to bring His word to those who are lost in sin. Let it inspire you and empower you today. Be the servant He wants you to be and go forth and share His message with everyone you can.
